Conor MacGearailt

Conor MacGearailt from Athy, Co. Kildare is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games.  The Games will run from the 25th June to 4th July 2011 in Athens, Greece.

Conor will compete in the equestrian competition as an independent rider and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games.  He loves the outdoors and being from Kildare it’s no surprise that his chosen sport involves horses.

Conor has been involved with Special Olympics for seven years and previously competed at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick, winning 1 gold, 1 silver and a 4th place.

He also competed in the 2006 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Belfast where he won 1 gold and 2 silver medals.  These achievements have been the highlights of his Special Olympics career to date.

This is Conor’s first time representing Ireland on the international sporting stage and being selected for Team Ireland and the chance to represent his county is the highlight of his time with Special Olympics so far. He is looking forward to the hot weather in Greece and the enjoyment he gets from participating in competitions and being part of a team.

His life has changed since becoming involved with Special Olympics. It has enabled him to do the BHS (British Horse Society) exams and has given him more of a focus: “I wouldn’t be where I am without it”, says Conor.

Conor’s hobbies and interests include soccer, rugby, basketball and music. 

Ryan Giggs is his favourite sporting hero. His favourite song is ‘Photograph’ by Nickelback.  He enjoys watching ‘The Simpsons’ while his favourite actor is Colin Farrell and his favourite film is the horror movie ‘Saw’.
